Our Sacred Heart University (SHU in Dingle) course is coming to a close. Three professors and four students participated in the first Criminal Justice course offered in Dingle, Ireland.

Dr. James McCabe, Sacred Heart University, Dr. Paul O'Connell, Iona College and Dr. Steve Morreale (me) from Worcester State University shared the teaching duties for this short, intensive, experiential learning course. Every Irish official we contacted were responsive, interested, and willing to accommodate our requests for information and visit. Our students were able to hear from a Solicitor, Inspector Andrew Lacey, Garda Newcastle West, visit two Garda Stations, Garda Tralee and Garda Dingle. Sergeant James Hurly provided a briefing at Dingle.

Students and faculty spent time in Cork Prison, and toured Spike Island. Governor Patrick Dawson hosted our group, and we were provided an in-depth tour by Assistant Chief Michael Walsh from the Irish Prison Service.

We also had a visit from Edel Kelly, Program Director for Garda Youth Program Projects to discuss juvenile programs for difficult youth.

Our course was packed with information, inquiry

and exploration. Students, as well as faculty, were provided an amazing learning opportunity! Looking forward to another session, perhaps next summer.
